Form

Past simple of to be ( was / were ) + Present Participle (...ing)

Use

1.Actions or situations in progress which were not finished at a particular time in the past. She was studying in England at the time.
2.Simultaneous past actions.( descibing a scene, telling a story). I was watching TV while my brother was playing.
3. To refer to an action that was interupted by another. I was having dinner when the telephone rang.
4. Past intentions often not carried out. I was planning to visit her in hosptial but she had already left.
